Practicing Traffic Safety
(in the car)
Mr. Lin:
Fasten your seat belts, everyone. We're off to the beach!
Paul:
All right! But Dad, do I have to wear my seat belt when I sit in the back
seat?
Mr. Lin:
Yes. In America, it's the law. Besides, if we have an accident, a seat
belt can save your life.
Paul:
Dad, you've been really careful about all the rules ever since you took
your driving test.
Mrs. Lin:
Yes, the officer who gave your dad the test was very
strict.
Driving here is very different from driving in
China.
Everyone is more careful to follow the rules.

Mr. Lin:
All right, everyone, we need to turn right at this
intersection.
Help me watch for cars.
Paul:
Can you turn on a red light? I thought red meant stop.
Mr. Lin:
It does, but if no one is coming, you can turn right after stopping first.
Is there anyone coming from the left, Susan?
Susan:
Yes, there's a green truck coming. But you can go. He's got his right
turn
signal
on. He's going to turn on this street.
Mrs. Lin:
Jack, I think you'd better
play
it safe
and wait. He may not turn here. Better safe than sorry.

Paul:
Dad, why don't you just turn? The light's green now. The people at the
crosswalk
will wait for you.
Mr. Lin:
I can't, son. In America,
pedestrians
have the
right
of way.
Paul:
Can't you blow your horn to make them hurry?
Mr. Lin:
No, that's not polite.
Mr. Lin:
All right, now, watch for signs to get on the freeway.
Susan:
Which freeway?
Mr. Lin:
We want to go west on freeway 10.
Susan:
There's the sign for 10 West. You'll need to turn left at the next light.
Mr. Lin:
OK, I'll get in the left lane.
Mr. Lin:
Here's the entrance to the freeway.
Paul:
Why is everyone slowing down? I thought you had to go faster to get onto
the freeway.
Mr. Lin:
See that light? It lets one car at a time onto the freeway. That way
everyone can get on the freeway safely.

Paul:
Look at all the traffic. There are five lanes going each way.
Susan:
And every lane is full of cars.
Paul:
Except the very left lane. Why don't you drive in that one, Dad?
Mr. Lin:
I can't. That's the
car
pool
lane, and I have already missed the entrance.
Mr. Lin: The
speed
limit
on this freeway is 65 miles per hour, but everyone is passing us.
Paul:
Why don't you go faster, Dad?
Mr. Lin:
I want to obey the traffic laws. I don't want to get a ticket.
Paul:
No one will know if you
speed.
Mr. Lin:
Yes, they will. There are a lot of policemen on these freeways, and they
stop cars for
exceeding
the speed limit.
Paul:
How much is a ticket?
Mr. Lin:
It depends. Sometimes over $100.
Paul:
That's a lot of money. Keep going the speed limit, Dad.

Mr. Lin:
You see? It's always a good idea to obey the traffic laws.
Mrs. Lin:
Jack, our exit is coming up. You need to get in the right lane.
Mr. Lin: We're almost to the beach. We'll need to start looking for
a place to park soon.
Mrs. Lin: That was fast. Driving here didn't take much time at all.
Susan:
It's great to have a car. It's so much nicer than taking the bus. And
there's another good thing about it, too.
Mr. Lin:
What's that?
Susan:
I heard American teenagers can drive when they're 16. I can hardly wait to
learn!
