Going
Shopping
Mrs. Lin:
Jack, you really need a new pair of boots. These boots are almost worn
out.
Mr. Lin:
No, they're not. They're fine. They're very comfortable.
Mrs. Lin:
One of the big department stores at the mall is having a shoe sale. It's a
good chance to get a new pair. It's a good opportunity to do some
Christmas shopping, too.
Mr. Lin:
You know I hate shopping.
Mrs. Lin:
I know, but it's necessary, unless you want to wear your
slippers
to the university all winter! And since they're having a sale, I might as
well get some new shoes, too.
Mr. Lin:
Hmmm, I thought so.
(in the parking lot)
Mrs. Lin:
Now, what do you want to look at first?
Mr. Lin:
I thought we
intended
to buy shoes.
Mrs. Lin:
We did, but it'd fun to look at other things as well. I'd like to buy some
Christmas cards. Can we look at them first?
Mr. Lin:
All right. But let's look at ones that aren't too expensive.

Clerk: Hi, may I help you?
Mrs. Lin: No, thank you. We're just looking.
Clerk:
OK, let me know if you need some help.
Mrs. Lin:
Thank you.
Clerk:
You're welcome.
Mrs. Lin:
Jack, the salespeople here are so
pleasant.
Mr. Lin:
Of course they're nice to you. They want you to buy something.

Mrs.
Lin:
Look at
these Christmas ornaments. Aren't
they pretty?
Mr. Lin:
Yes. Now
let's go buy the cards you want.
Mrs. Lin:
All
right, but I'd like to look around a little more.
Mr. Lin:
We're
here to buy shoes. Let's go to the department store.
Mrs. Lin:
Here we
are. Oh, let's stop and look at the jewelry counter, Jack.
Mr. Lin:
We're
here to buy shoes, not jewelry.
Mrs. Lin:
Mmmm,
doesn't this perfume smell nice?
Maybe Susan would like some for Christmas. It's only $45.
Mr. Lin:
Let's go
and look at the shoes.

Clerk:
Can I
help you?
Mrs. Lin: Yes, I want to try on
these dress shoes, and my husband wants to try on these boots.
Clerk:
What
size?
Mrs. Lin:
We're not
sure. Can you measure our feet?
Clerk:
Let's
see, your husband needs a size eight and a half, and you need a size
seven.
Mrs. Lin:
Shoe
sizes in the States sound so much nicer than they do at home. In Taiwan, I
wear a size 37!

Clerk:
Here you
are, ma'am. I brought a size seven and a half, too, just in case. This
shoe sometimes runs a little small.
Mrs. Lin:
Oh, thank
you. Let me try them on.
Mr. Lin:
What
about those boots for me?
Clerk:
I'm
sorry, sir. We're all out of that
boot in your size. Maybe you can find another style to try on.
Mr. Lin:
What
about this one? They're just my size. And they're on sale, too.
Clerk:
A good
choice, sir. That brand holds up
well, and they'll go with anything.
Mrs. Lin:
Those
trendy
boots? Well, as long as they make you happy, let's get them. Then we can
go home.
Mr. Lin:
Not yet.
Mrs. Lin:
Why not?
Mr. Lin:
Well, now
I need to get a leather jacket to go with these boots!
