The
First Day
This is Jessica Martin's first day at StarComp Inc., a computer company.
Her orientation begins in the
office of personnel manager Mel Brown. Mel makes sure that Jessica
understands the company's workplace rules, vacation and sick leave
policies, employee benefits and many other things. He also gives Jessica
the StarComp employee handbook.
Mel: Any questions, Jessica?
Jessica: Concerning the three-month
probation-how can I know if I'm doing well enough to pass?
Mel: We regularly review the performance of staff on probation.
We'll keep you informed. And don't worry too much. We choose and train our
employees very carefully, so the chance of unpleasant surprises is quite
low.

Mel:
Everything clear so far?
Jessica:
Pretty
much, but I was wondering if there is a dress
code?
Mel:
Yes, but
it's not unreasonable. StarComp just wants employees to look their best
and represent the company well.
Jessica:
Does that
mean no casual clothes?
Mel:
Not
exactly. It just means no shorts and no blue jeans. Except at company
picnics, of course! But there's no need to go out and buy a whole new
wardrobe. Just use your own good
judgment. Any more questions?
Jessica:
Yes. When
can I get started?
Mel takes Jessica to the Engineering
Department. There, Jessica has another meeting, this time with her new
supervisor, Betty Armstrong.
Betty:
Welcome
to Engineering, Jessica. It's nice to have you with us.
Jessica:
Thank
you. It's nice to be here.
Betty:
You may
feel differently soon. This department is a
high-pressure world. Working here is a big challenge.
Jessica:
I know.
That's why I applied here. I like challenges.
Betty:
Well, I
must warn you. You may get discouraged at first. Most new employees do.
But don't give up.
Jessica:
I won't-I
hope.

Betty:
I'm here
to help you do your best. If you have any problems or questions, my door
is usually open. I find that good communication is not always easy, but
it's definitely worth the effort. When you have a complaint, as I'm sure
you will sooner or later, don't stew
over it. Tell me about it. I'll do my best to deal with it as quickly as
possible.
Jessica:
Great. I
feel the same way. Please let me know if my work isn't
up to par.
Betty:
Certainly. I'll give you lots of honest
feedback. It may not always
sound "positive" at first, but remember, my job is to help you do your
best. I take that job very seriously.
A coworker named Janet is assigned to train Jessica on the office computer
system. For the rest of the morning, she teaches Jessica how to
log on, how to send and receive
e-mail, and how to use the project
scheduling software. Then she takes Jessica to the company
cafeteria for lunch.

Janet:
Well, how
do you feel after your first morning at StarComp?
Jessica:
Pretty
good, Janet. But I think this job will be more difficult than I expected.
Janet:
Don't
worry. Everyone feels that way when they join Engineering. With our
training system, though, you'll learn the
ropes quickly. If you need any help understanding the way we do
things here, just ask me. I know everything. (laughs)
Jessica:
I was
wondering about one thing. Our supervisor, Betty, seems a little, well,
stern. I think she doesn't like me
very much.
Janet:
Oh, don't
be too quick to judge Betty. It's true that she's not the sweetest person
in the department. Actually, I am. (laughs) But don't con-fuse her
personality with her management style. You'll soon find that she's a very
good supervisor. You likely won't become her best friend-none of us have.
But with Betty, that doesn't matter. Whether she likes you or not, she'll
always look out for your best interests. She's fair,
even-tempered and very reasonable. And
if she hadn't agreed to your hiring, you wouldn't be here.
Jessica:
Thanks,
Janet. That makes me feel a lot better. I think I'll come back to work
tomorrow!
