Going to the Clinic

Mrs. Lin: Paul, it's time to get up for school. You only have 20 minutes before the bus comes.
Paul: I don't feel very good, Mom. My throat hurts, and I feel hot all over.
Mrs. Lin: Oh, dear. Let me see if you have a fever. (feels his head) You've got a fever all right. You're burning up. You'd better stay in bed today.
Paul: Good. I don't feel like doing anything. I don't even feel like watching TV.
Mrs. Lin: My, you are sick.
(the next morning)
Mrs. Lin: How are you feeling today, Paul?
Paul: Terrible. I still ache all over. My throat hurts even worse than yesterday.
Mrs. Lin: I need to take you to the university clinic. You need to see a doctor. I'll call and see if we can get an appointment today.

The clinic told Mrs. Lin that they could see Paul around 11:00 that morning. The receptionist reminded Mrs. Lin to bring her health insurance information with her.
Mrs. Lin and Paul went to the university clinic a little before 11:00. They checked in at the front desk.
Receptionist: Good morning. Can I help you?
Mrs. Lin: Yes, I called a little while ago about my son. You said we could come in around 11:00. His name is Paul.
Receptionist: Is this his first visit?
Mrs. Lin: Yes.
Receptionist: Then you need to fill out this form on his health history and this form about your insurance.
Mrs. Lin and Paul sat down in the waiting room. While Paul looked at some magazines, Mrs. Lin filled out the forms. She gave them back to the receptionist. Soon a nurse took Paul and his mother into an
examination room.

Nurse: Good afternoon. My name is Karen. I'm one of the nurse practitioners. What seems to be the problem?
Mrs. Lin: He woke up yesterday with a sore throat and a fever. He ached all over, too. He's not much better today, so I thought I'd better bring him to see a doctor.
Nurse: Well, let me take a look at him first.
Paul: What's a nurse practitioner?
Nurse: I'm a specially trained nurse who can examine, diagnose and treat common medical problems.
Paul: So you're just like a doctor?
Nurse: No, but I work closely with the doctor. I can write prescriptions. But if you're really sick, I may have to give you a shot.
Paul: No, thanks!
*

Nurse: First let's take your temperature. Let's put the thermometer under your tongue.
Mrs. Lin: I gave him some Tylenol this morning to bring down his fever.
Nurse: That's good. You don't want to let it get too high. Let's see, his temperature is 101.5.
Mrs. Lin: That's pretty high, isn't it?
Nurse: Yes, but it's not too serious.
Nurse: Let me look at the other ear. They both look fine. Let me take a look at your nose. That looks OK, too. Now let me look at your throat. Can you open your mouth now?
Mrs. Lin: What's wrong?
Nurse: His throat is red and swollen. He has a common throat infection. Let me write you a prescription. And you can go across the street to the pharmacy and get the medicine.

Pharmacist: Good afternoon. What can I do for you?
Mrs. Lin: We'd like to fill this prescription.
Pharmacist: OK. It will take just a minute.
Mrs. Lin: Thank you. Do you have any vitamins?
Pharmacist: Yes, they're on the second aisle on the left.
(later)
Pharmacist: Here you are. Take a teaspoon of this medicine four times a day after meals and before you go to bed. And be sure you don't take it on an empty stomach.
Mrs. Lin: How long will it take him to get better?
Pharmacist: He should be better in about a week.
Paul: I'm already better. I feel like watching TV!
